Revolution in Sudan: Activists share their experiences

A popular uprising in Sudan, which started in December 2018, ended 30 years of military rule and led to the recent signing of a deal between the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) and the Transitional Military Council (TMC). Sudan will now have a transitional period of 39 months, during which power will be shared between a civilian government and the military. Muzan Alneel and Walaa Salah, two active participants in the uprising, will look back at the period since December 2018, charting the course of the uprising and reflecting critically on what the current moment means.

The seminar will also locate the revolution within an earlier history of popular uprisings against military dictatorship, and the rise and fall of Islamism in Sudan.Muzan Alneel is an engineer, a Marxist activist and a blogger. One of many activists detained during the uprising, Muzan is one of the most important critical voices in Sudan today, pointing to the weaknesses and contradictions of the current political arrangement.

Walaa Salah is a human rights activist with a legal background. In 2007, she was the first woman and youngest ever to be elected as the President of the Khartoum Students Union. Walaa currently lives in Nairobi, where she works on Sudan issues, and travels back frequently to the country.
