Tshisimani 10-Year Celebration Exhibition

June 2026

This year, Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education celebrates 10 years of working alongside grassroots movements, activists, and communities across South Africa and the continent.

To mark this milestone, we will host a public exhibition in June 2026 that reflects on struggles for justice, dignity, and freedom – past and present.

As part of the exhibition, we are inviting grassroots movements, organisations, and activists we have worked with to submit photographs and short videos from their struggles, organising, and community work.

These materials will help tell the story of people organising for change – in housing struggles, water and electricity struggles, land justice, worker organising, feminist struggles, youth organising, and many other movements.

Why this exhibition matters

The exhibition will bring together:

• Contemporary movement images and videos from the struggles of today
• Historical materials from the Mayibuye Archives, including photographs of the 1976 student uprisings

By placing these histories side by side, the exhibition will show the continuity of resistance — from the student uprisings of the past to the struggles of today.

What you can submit

We welcome:

Photographs

  • Protests and marches
  • Community meetings and organising
  • Moments of solidarity and resistance
  • Everyday organising work in communities

Short videos

  • Clips from protests or campaigns
  • Short testimonies or movement moments
  • Community organising activities

Guidelines

• Photos should be clear and good quality if possible
• Videos should ideally be under 3 minutes
• Please include:

  • Name of organisation or movement
  • Location
  • Year the photo/video was taken
  • A short description of what is happening in the image/video

Important

Please only send materials where people have agreed to be photographed or filmed, and where it is safe to share publicly.
